Brief Bio
Marta Patiño-Martínez received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in 1999. In 2000 she co-founded the Distributed Systems Lab at the same University. She is currently Director of the Distributed Systems Lab (LSD) at UPM. Her main research interests are distributed and scalable systems, middleware and cloud platforms. She has published more than 100 research papers with over 2,200 citations (Google Scholar). She is the Project Coordinator the FP7 projects LeanBigData and CoherentPaaS and was Project Coordinator of the FP7 CumuloNimbo project. She is the Project Coordinator of the national research project CloudStorm (2010-2013). She is a Researcher in the Stream, 4Caast, MASSIF and IOLanes FP7 projects. She is co-founder of the joint research institute COM between Santander bank and UPM. She is co-founder of LeanXcale the start-up created to commercialize the results of the projects that UPM-LSD has coordinated in the last years.

Brief Bio
Florent Masseglia is Research Director at INRIA. He works in Montpellier, in the Zenith team of INRIA on the analysis of very large scientific data. These data, derived from observations, experiments and simulation are indeed complex, often very large, and are at the heart of important issues to better understand the studied domains (agronomy, biology, medicine). He did his PhD in computer science at Montpellier in co-supervision with the University of Saint-Quentin en Yvelines (graduated in 2001), in the area of knowledge discovery from databases. Until 2010 he worked in Sophia Antipolis on the development and application of these techniques for knowledge discovery in areas related to usage (such as navigation on Web sites) and large amounts of data.

SCOPE

The current cloud landscape is getting populated with many applications that are being migrated to the cloud due to its convenience and ease of use. However, there are still a subset of applications that are not frequent in the cloud. These are data-intensive and time critical applications. Data intensive applications, in the best case, experience bad performance in the cloud as current cloud database infrastructure fails to satisfy high loads and does not provide predictable performance. Many critical applications run today on mainframes due to their high resilience and high performance. This workshop will be a dedicated forum to data-intensive and time critical applications and promising related research topics like, e.g., hardware enabling in-memory databases, in-memory scale-up operational databases, or high availability/efficiency.
